Firehouse #12
The Carithers and Koch Facial Plastic Surgery office building is a former firehouse built in 1901. This two-story brick building was built in the Greek Revival style, which was popular at the turn of the century. It was used by the City of Des Moines as a firehouse until 1976, after which it sat vacant until Dr. Carithers purchased it in 1991. Extensive renovation and an addition to the building resulted in a restoration that has been recognized by architectural and preservation awards.
The restored interior of Firehouse #12 is remarkable for the 10-foot-wide stained-glass window above the reception desk (original to the building), the pressed tin ceiling in the reception area and exposed brick interior walls. The brass firepole in the reception area is still operational, as is the fire gong. An extensive collection of firehouse memorabilia adds further interest and historic flair to this fully modern medical facility.
A century ago, Firehouse #12 was best known as the home of two famous horses named Jack and Jack. In the early 1900's fire wagon races were commonly held and these fraternal twin horses were world champions, the fastest firehouse team in 1904. Their stalls were in the rear of the building. Ask Dr. Carithers and Dr. Koch about them.
